We were invited to pre-screen the new movie, Spirit Untamed. All opinions are my own.
Spirit Untamed
Do you miss going to movie theaters? With very few theaters open and very limited movie options, many people have sat at home on the couch for the past year. We hadn’t been to a theater in over a year, and we honestly had no idea how much we had missed it! Last week, our family was invited to enjoy a pre-screening of the new movie Spirit Untamed, coming only to theaters June 4th. It was our first official trip back to the theater and it was so enjoyable!
“Be strong, be brave
Let courage lead the way
Stand tall and know who you areWild heart, wild soul
Roam free to the unknown
And know that you have everything you need
to be fearless… fearless”
The Details
Spirit Untamed is the next chapter in DreamWorks Animation’s beloved franchise that began with the 2002 Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of Cimarron and includes an Emmy-winning TV series. Starring the voices of Isabela Merced, Julianne Moore, Jake Gyllenhaal, Marsai Martin, Mckenna Grace, Walton Goggins, Andre Braugher and Eiza González. Directed by Elaine Bogan.
An epic adventure about a headstrong girl longing for a place to belong who discovers a kindred spirit when her life intersects with a wild horse, Spirit Untamed is the next chapter in the beloved story from DreamWorks Animation. Lucky Prescott never really knew her late mother, Milagro Navarro, a fearless horse-riding stunt performer from Miradero, a small town on the edge of the wide-open frontier.
Like her mother, Lucky isn’t exactly a fan of rules and restrictions, which has caused her Aunt Cora no small amount of worry. Lucky has grown up in an East Coast city under Cora’s watchful eye, but when Lucky presses her own luck with one too many risky escapades, Cora picks up stakes and moves them both back with Lucky’s father, Jim, in Miradero.
Lucky is decidedly unimpressed with the sleepy little town. She has a change of heart when she meets Spirit, a wild Mustang who shares her independent streak, and befriends two local horseback riders, Abigail Stone and Pru Granger. Pru’s father, stable owner Al Granger, is the best friend of Lucky’s father.
When a heartless horse wrangler and his team plan to capture Spirit and his herd and auction them off to a life of captivity and hard labor, Lucky enlists her new friends and bravely embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to rescue the horse who has given her freedom and a sense of purpose, and has helped Lucky discover a connection to her mother’s legacy and to her Mexican heritage that she never expected.
Who Will Enjoy This Movie?
Not to fear, if you haven’t seen the series, you can watch the movie and be totally fine! My kids had all seen the series, but I had not. I felt like the movie did a great job of setting up the storyline and introducing the characters for those that aren’t familiar with the Spirit storyline.
We went with 10 kids, boys and girls ages 1 to 14. We had such an enjoyable time and I love that our first movie back at the theater was one that had something for everyone in our group. It had been so long since any of us had gone out of the house to see a movie (I’m pretty sure we would have been excited to watch anything), but Spirit Untamed was the sweetest movie we didn’t know we needed. The girls (ages 7 to 10) absolutely loved it, our little boys (ages 1 and 3) stayed pretty engaged through most of it, and our apprehensive teens refused to admit how much they actually liked it (but I know they did!).
What we loved
I loved that this movie was legitimately enjoyable to watch. It was a fun movie with lots of sweet elements, catchy songs and humorous moments. The girls have been listening to the soundtrack on repeat since watching it last week. The characters are fun and authentic with real life friendship lessons throughout. We loved that this movie included diversity and was culturally rich. Find the soundtrack HERE.
