Red White and Blue Art Using Wood Shims

Sarah Lempon May 22, 2014(updated May 22, 2018)368
I had a lot of fun creating red, white and blue art using wood shims! I’m sharing today how I did this project, along with some other great ideas for the 4th of July!

It’s CREATIVE BUZZ time

Check out all these awesome red, white and blue art projects to inspire your patriotic celebrating:
1. Paint Dipped Milk Bottles from Tied Ribbon
2. Red, White & Blue Sugar Cookies from Made to be a Momma
3. Nursery Reveal from Carissa Miss
4. Red White & Blue Layered Cake from Just Us Four
5. Fresh Berries & Cream Panna Cotta from Handmade in the Heartland
6. Flag Bunting from Seven Thirty Three
7. Red, White and Blue Wood Shim Art from All Things with Purpose
8. Patriotic Funfetti Cupcakes from This Silly Girl’s Life
9. Berries & Cream White Chocolate Bark from Do Small Things with Love
10. Red White & Blue Braided Headband from Sugar Bee Crafts
11. Red White & Blue T-Shirt Scarf from One Krieger Chick

When we decided on the red, white and blue theme, I figured I’d incorporate the use of wood shims – which has been on my Pinterest to-do list for a while now! I bought a pack of the 8 Inch Pine Shims and the 15 Inch Cedar Shims from the Home Depot. So many come in a package, I thought I’d try several different designs.

The design above was using the long shims with the short ones on the back for support. Below is the shorter shims. My goal was to make something without having to cut the shims at all. The picture below was kind of an experimental idea! I think it turned out OK :)

The traditional red, white and blue colors would really not fit well in my home, so I wanted to create something that was more of a pastel version.

Here’s the back view of 2 different ones. I used hot glue to hold the pieces in place and then painted the fronts. I’d love to hear what you come up with!
